Firm Background

The consulting practice of S. Harris & Co., established in January 2000, offers expert professional advice in the general domain of buildings and construction to clients both nationally and internationally. The firm provides advisory and technical services to property owners, architects, engineers, attorneys, contractors, preservationists, boards of directors, and institutional administrators to guide them through the myriad building and construction-related problems. The firm is guided by the principle that being a professional means elevating the clients' interests above one's own, even...and particularly...when those interests may be in conflict.  Sam Harris says, "The solution of each client's problem is an end in itself.  We do not view our clients and their problems as a means to ulterior goals such as awards and fame."

Unique to S. Harris & Co. is the multi-faceted background of its principal Samuel Y. Harris.  Sam has graduate degrees in architecture, engineering, and law as well as extensive experience in historic preservation, engineering and architectural design, and project planning. . .all of which enable him to provide a level of expertise unequaled in his field.

S. Harris & Co. has the low overhead and flexibility of a small company, coupled with the experience and staff required to respond quickly to the specific needs of individual clients and their projects.

The operating philosophy at S. Harris & Co. is simply that our clients are our most valued assets.  The firm perceives its role as that of guide and advisor...hired to assist our clients through the process of problem solving and execution.  At S. Harris & Co., our job is to research the presented dilemma, outline all reasonable and available options, array the options in a way that assists the client in making an informed decision, and then to abide by the client's decision as diligently as though it were our own.

With a total of more than forty years dedicated to design and historic preservation, Samuel Y. Harris and his associates have provided technical and advisory services for Eastern State Penitentiary, Glen Foerd on the Delaware, Pennsylvania Hospital's Historic Pine Building, Loudoun Mansion, Memorial Hall, The Fairmount Park Art Association, Fairmount Waterworks, Historic Fallsington, the Bermudian Ministry of Education, the National Park Service, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the City of Philadelphia, the City of Wilmington, and the General Services Administration as well as numerous architects in the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean.
