In April of 2002, S. Harris & Co. was hired by David Fuster Architects as the Historical Architects and Engineers for the completion of the renovation of the theater at the University of Puerto Rico. S. Harris & Co.'s initial task was to investigate and report on the condition of the 1930'sa structure, the mechanical systems and their impact of the historic interiors, and the access issues as they pertain to the Americans with Disabilities Act. The theater, which has been unoccupied since 1999, is sited within the center of the University's campus in its historic quadrangle.
Based upon the report prepared by
S. Harris & Co., the University has decided to pursue the $12,000,000
restoration project as well as implement a campus-wide assessment of the
decorative terracotta tiles, which are characteristic of its historic buildings
and the quadrangle. The restoration efforts will reopen the doors of this
historically significant theater to the students and surrounding community. S. Harris & Co. provided preservation engineering services on the project to rehabilitate El Teatro, the historic theater on the campus of the University of Puerto Rico. The Assessment Report submitted to Davis Fuster Arquitectos provided analyses of the building's envelope, accessibility issues, and the proposed HVAC system and existing fire suppression systems. Continuing with the next phase of the project, S. Harris & Co. provided an in-depth analysis of the terracotta roofing and ornamental tiles, with specific treatment recommendations for implementation ion the overall restoration project.
