"I have a story to tell you…"

Pepón Osorio with Congreso de Latinos Unidos

An art installation for the Fairmount Park Art Association, this project involved the design and structural requirements for transforming the artist's vision for his project "I have a story to tell you…" into a physical reality. This project is comprised of two separate but associated parts. The first is a glass and steel "Casita" located on an existing concrete pad next to the Congreso building. The photographs selected by the artist were screened onto the glass to create a personal artistic statement. The second part is as set of aluminum frames that hold the same art glass on the interior of the Congreso building. S. Harris & Co. designed the steel and aluminum frames as well as their method of installation into the existing conditions and provided management during the bidding and construction phases.  The installation was dedicated in a ceremony on June 18, 2003 that was attended by the artists, Governor Rendell of Pennsylvania, and Governor Calderon of Puerto Rico.

"Embodying Thoreau: dwelling, sitting, watching"

Ed Levine with the Pennypack Environmental Center Advisory Council

S. Harris & Co. worked again with the Fairmount Park Art Association on another art installation entitled "Embodying Thoreau: dwelling, sitting, watching".  S. Harris & Co. provided the Construction Documents required to bid and construct the three components of this ambitious art project: the Bird Blind, Thoreau's Hut, and the Benches. The Bird Blind is a wood hut giving the illusion of a nest from which one may watch birds. Thoreau's Hut is a stylized representation of the cabin on Walden Pond in Massachusetts which can be experienced by visitors to the park. The Benches are dramatic circular forms placed for visitors to sit and enjoy nature. The Construction Documents comprised the structural requirements for both the wood art pieces and their foundations. S. Harris also provided management during the bidding and construction phases.  The installation, designed by Ed Levine for the Pennypack Environmental Center, was dedicated on October 4, 2003.

"Church Lot"

Lorene Cary, Lonnie Graham, and John Stone with Project H.O.M.E.

This project for the Fairmount Park Art Association will bring back to life the empty lot where an inner city church burned down years before. Comprised of a "temple" structure and the surrounding site work, S. Harris & Co. is providing design development and engineering services to help the artist achieve his reflective vision for the space. Upon approval of the design drawings, S. Harris will provide Construction Documents and management during the bidding and construction phases.
