HEALTH CENTER #9, PHILADELPHIA, PA

Health Center #9 is a fine example of a mid-century modern building and was designed by the well respected Philadelphia architect, Ehrman B. Mitchell, Jr..  S. Harris & Co. was retained by Schade and Bolendar Architects for the purpose of investigating and participating in the building's renovations.  Included in this scope of work is a full assessment of the existing windows on the second floor.

The second floor window work will require a careful assessment of the existing conditions, and an analysis of the typical configurations.  Each condition will be documented, and we will explore the pros and cons of various approaches to providing energy efficiency and long-lasting weather protection. The project scope also includes the design of a structural steel rigid framing system to enclose the courtyard on the first floor.  The original design intent of bringing the outdoors into the heart of the building will be sustained, but with a view of the sky rather than a confined area of landscaping.  The enclosure will be accomplished with clerestory windows.
