STRUCTURE
The Centennial Comfort Stations are two masonry buildings with slate roofs and wood fenestration. The former restroom facilities date to the Centennial Exposition in 1876.
CHALLENGE
Years of neglect and foundation failure have resulted in structural displacement and deformation. The masonry structure, wood elements and roofing are all in a state of failure.
SCOPE OF SERVICE
- Assess and report conditions to the Fairmount Park staff and the City of Philadelphia’s Capital Program Office.
- Prepare design documents to restore the buildings.
- Provide an order of magnitude for the client to facilitate budgeting for the work.
- Provide construction documents based on comments for the approved work.
SOLUTION
- Excavate and rebuild the foundation to stabilize the masonry building.
- Replace brick and repoint where necessary to minimize water infiltration.
- Replace the roof and install copper gutters to direct storm water away from the buildings.
- Repair all wood windows, including all decorative trim and soffits, to restore both buildings to their original appearance.
HISTORIC STATUS
Listed on the local register of historic properties within the Fairmount Park system. |
