CLIENT Union County Department of Parks, Recreation, & Facilities LOCATION The Deserted Village of Feltville/Glenside Park Union County, New Jersey STRUCTURE In 1845, Daniel Felt founded Feltville as a small company village consisting of Greek Revival-style buildings. Feltville was founded on Utopian ideals and beliefs in societal reform similar to other popular movements in nineteenth-century America. Occupants worked for Felt’s stationary firm, Stationer’s Hall, specializing in the production of colorful “marbleized” paper that was used for book end covers. In 1882, Feltville became a summer resort and was renamed to Glenside, and the cottages were remodeled in the rustic Adirondack style. The Masker’s Barn dates from 1885 and was originally used as a carriage house for summer visitors. Over the next thirty years, the popularity of the resort declined due to increased mobility caused by the automobile, and a general preference for vacationing at the nearby New York and New Jersey shores. Our involvement was initiated in 2006 and restorations are to take place in 2009. CHALLENGE We were retained by Watson & Henry Associates to provide the structural stabilization component of construction documents. Watson & Henry provided the comprehensive architectural construction documents for the full barn restoration. The south portion of the timber framed building was in a state of collapse in the winter of 2006-2007. We provided emergency stabilization documents to get the building through the winter, anticipating that long term improvements would be implemented shortly thereafter. SCOPE OF SERVICE
The barn was placed on the New Jersey and National Register of Historic Places. |
