S. Harris & Co. was retained
by
MGA Partners Architects as the Historic Preservation Consultant on the
renovation of Linderman Library at Lehigh University in early 2004. The original portion
of the building, built in 1877, was designed by a Philadelphia architect, Addison
Hutton. A major gothic style addition was added in 1929, which surrounds all
sides of the original building except for its rotunda on the south side. The
building houses the humanities collection and is a campus landmark. The
renovation will turn the library into a humanities center for the University
community. For the renovation project, S. Harris & Co. was retained to undertake the survey and documentation of the exterior building elevations and roof plan, including measured drawings and a written report. The firm also evaluated the exterior windows and documented repairs, restoration and remedies for condensation and heat loss. This window evaluation resulted in a detailed schedule and profile drawings of each window type and location, keyed to the elevation drawings. The next phase of the work included developing and documenting exterior restoration work, including roof repair, masonry repair and repointing, and historic door restoration. S. Harris & Co. provided further consultation as necessary throughout the course of the renovation.
