Loudoun Mansion  Philadelphia, PA

In early 2004, S. Harris & Co. was contracted to undertake the interior restoration of Loudoun Mansion, a grand, federal style park home that for many years has sat vacant and been underutilized. Although the owner had not designated a specific use, the mansion required stabilization, consolidation, and renovations to prepare the property for future use by the park.  S. Harris & Co. surveyed and documented the existing conditions and prepared design documents and treatment recommendations for a historically sensitive restoration.

One of the challenges the building presented was the design of the roof and its inability to drain properly.  Located at the roof juncture of the original house and the addition, a "funnel" had been created in the roof line, which forced a large amount of the rainwater along one side of the building.  The poor roof drainage not only affected the interior plaster walls, but also the perimeter of the foundation where water was directed back towards the home and into the basement.  S. Harris & Co. redesigned this area of the roof and the perimeter drainage issues.  All designs and treatments were presented and approved by the client and the City of Philadelphia's Historical Commission, which oversees alteration, repairs, and renovations on local historic sites.

S. Harris & Co. prepared construction documents and specifications and assisted the City with construction administration.  The interior renovations and the roof reconfiguration of historic Loudoun Mansion were completed in the spring of 2006.
