PENNYPACKER MILLS BARN, SCHWENKSVILLE, PA

S. Harris & Co. was retained by the Montgomery County Parks and Heritage Services Department to conduct a conditions assessment of the barn at the Pennypacker Mills site.  The barn, constructed in about 1787, is part of the Pennypacker Mills National Historic Landmark.  The focus of the investigation was to examine and evaluate the existing structure of the barn and provide recommendations for necessary repairs for its stabilization and future re-roofing campaign.

The structural assessment of the Pennypacker Mills Barn was conducted through several site visits during the months of June and July.  General measurements were taken during the first visit in order to create a plan of the structure and locate the building on the site.  Additional visits were made to complete detailed documentation of the barn's structural scheme.  The barn was photographed and measured in detail for documentation purposes.

Pennypacker Mills is a 135-acre property which includes a c. 1720 mansion.  It was purchased in 1747 by the Pennypacker family and remained privately owned by the Pennypackers for eight generations.  In 1901, Pennsylvania Governor Samuel W. Pennypacker enlarged and redesigned the mill to serve as his summer home.  Today the site is open to the public for tours and also hosts special events such as Civil War reenactments.
