S. Harris & Co. was retained by Watson & Henry Associates as the structural engineer and roof consultant for the David Sheppard House, leased by Rutgers University. The scope of the project includes the survey and analysis of the existing interior structure, and design of the structural reinforcements for the future use of a marine sciences educational facility. The scope also includes the structural design of a new addition on the north side of the Sheppard House. The Sheppard House is a four story plus basement brick structure with timber structural members. The structural design improvements involved reinforcing the main collector beams and joists at each level with a combination of timer scabs and steel plates. The proposed new addition is a three story plus basement Ivany block building with composite steel deck floors. A new ret6aining wall and stepped gabion system is also proposed for construction.
