S. Harris & Co. was happy to work again with Brockington and Associates, Inc. on the U.S. Montgomery. The Snagboat served on seven navigable rivers in the south from 1926 to 1982. In 1984, a large restoration project began, after which, the Montgomery was moored at the Tom Bevill Visitor Center and opened to tours. The U.S. Department of the Interior designated the U.S. Snagboat Montgomery a National Historic Landmark in 1989. In October of 2003, the Montgomery was lifted from the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway and placed in a specially-design cradle, in order to protect her from damaging river traffic and environmental factors. Sam Harris visited the Montgomery in November of 2003 in order to conduct a conditions assessment. The inspection was completed over two days. The first day focused on the superstructure, the cabin areas, and other areas above the main deck as well as the internment basin. The second day's inspection was concentrated on the interior of the hull and the confined spaces below the main deck. S. Harris & Co. provided Brockington and Associates, Inc. with summary observations relating to the condition and necessary interventions. A maintenance plan was developed in late 2003 and extensive restoration work began in early 2004. In late October 2004, the Montgomery, one of two remaining steam-powered sternwheel snagboats in the United States, was once again opened to visitors with a Grand Re-Opening and Restoration Celebration.
