Tyler Hall  Bucks County Community College, Newtown, PA

Tyler Hall is considered the centerpiece of the former Tyler Estate, on which the main campus of Bucks County Community College now sits.  The campus is nestled within over 200 acres of the original 2,000 acre Tyler estate.  Tyler Hall, a sixty-room mansion, was constructed by George F. Tyler in 1930.  Tyler Hall is now home to administrative offices and classroom spaces, while retaining many of its original interior ands exterior decorative details.

S. Harris & Co. was contracted in early 2003 to assess and provide recommendations for a variety of exterior building issues that Tyler Hall presented.  These included problematic roof drainage on the building as resetting/replacing the paving of the building's walkways and rooftop terraces.  This investigation also included thorough documentation and design of appropriate modifications and repairs to wrought iron railings to meet code compliance.  Specifications for replacements of roofing tiles, flagstones, flashings, copper gutters and downspouts, as well as paint removal and refurbishment of wrought iron rails were prepared.

S. Harris & Co. also provided design services for a new lighting scheme in the Music Room of Tyler Hall. After investigating the attic space and walls for wiring feasibility, the firm prepared three viable lighting schemes that addressed general area lighting, reading light, and focused lighting for presentations and speakers.  We consulted photographs of the original lighting scheme of the room for reference.  The scope of the project also included three exterior lighting fixtures for two bathhouses and a gazebo.
